A while back I began keeping a series of running notes while reading my way through Jane Austen, amassing some fifty typewritten pages. I have decided to upload some of these notes to a blog, along with new notes which I will jot down whenever an idea falls from the sky and hits me in the head.
I grew up reading Sgt. Rock comics and Mike Hammer novels. Nothing in my background predisposed me to take any interest in the landed gentry of Regency England. Really, I am just a normal All- American guy...but one who discovered Jane Austen the same way others are struck by religion for the first time in midlife.I hope these notes are able to convey something of the excitement of that discovery. And I hope as well that anyone who chances on these pages will be inspired to think about the issues raised by Austen's novels, and come to their own conclusions about them.
